Postdoctoral Research Fellowship/Researcher in Neuroscience at University of Oslo
Overview
Two Positions as Postdoctoral Research fellows (SKO 1352)/Researchers (SKO 1109) in systems neurosciene are available in the laboratory of Marianne Fyhn and Torkel Hafting at Department of Molecular Biosciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo, Norway.
We are searching for highly motivated candidates with a strong interest in neural processing and plasticity of cortical circuits. The planned research makes use of state of the art electrophysiological recordings and multiphoton imaging in vivo. The fellowships are for a period of three years, suggested starting date July 1st, 2011.
Job description/Project description
The brain reveals a remarkable ability to adapt to changing conditions, and a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying neural processing and plasticity is of utmost importance to understand and promote healthy development, learning, and recovery from disease. It remains unknown how synaptic rearrangements and change in synaptic efficacies are reflected in the activity of cortical networks and how such activity leads to behavioral or perceptual changes. In our laboratory we study neural processing and plasticity ofcortical circuits at multiple levels from the morphological changes of dendritic spines to functional changes of network activity in behaving animals.
The work is part of the project “Neural processing and plasticity of cortical circuits in behaving animals” funded by the Norwegian Research Council (FRIBIO).
Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD degree in physiology, neuroscience or related disciplines. The ideal candidates should have experience with electrophysiology, multiphoton imaging or in vivo imaging techniques, and programming.
One candidate will be engaged with in vivo extracellular recordings from large population of neurons (method described in Fyhn et al., 2004) and the other candiate will use transcranial two-photon laser scanning microscopy of identified neurons. The aims of the projects are to reveal how brief experiences are transformed into long-term changes in the brain.
We offer broad training possibilities in the required experimental methods within a stimulating academic environment. The research fellow should be able to work independently and structured, while at the same time engage in close collaborations both within the group and internationally.
Candidates who have already been employed as Post doctor at the University of Oslo may be employed as Researcher. When evaluating the application, emphasis will be given to applicant`s academic and personal abilities to carry out the project. Applicants may be called in for an interview.
